Declaring the Psychology Major

Students who indicate Psychology on their UC admissions applications will be considered proposed Psychology until they declare. To declare the General or Intensive Psychology major you must complete:

  • Applied Mathematics 3: Pre-Calculus for the Social Sciences (OR Courses: MATH 3 or 4, or 11A or 11B, or 19A or 19B; OR Tests: 300+ on ALEKS Math Placement, or a 3+ on AP Calculus exam)
  • Psychology 1: Introduction to Psychology (OR 4+ on AP Psychology exam)
  • Psychology 2: Introduction to Psychological Statistics (OR STAT 5 or STAT 7/7L; OR 4+ on AP Statistics exam)

You must take all courses required to declare the major for a letter grade. The minimum grade for the Psyc 1 and Psyc 2 course requirements is B-. The mininum grade for the math course requirement is C. Once these requirements are completed with the required course grades or scores, you can declare the Psychology major following the instructions below. 

Petition for Major Declaration 

Student interested in declaring Cognitive Science or Psychology must complete the following;

  1. Review the Major Declaration Information Presentation.


  2. Verify that you have completed all of the declaration requirements for Psychology.

  3. Fill out a Major Declaration Request Form to initiate your declaration. (You must be signed into your UCSC email to access- use a private/incognito browser that requires you to sign into your UCSC account if you have trouble accessing the Google form.) Make sure that you answer all questions pertaining to your major.

  4. On the request form, upload ONE PDF file that includes all of your unofficial transcripts from ALL college(s) you have attended and your Petition For Major Declaration Form

  5. Review all of your responses before submitting. Failure to answer questions or provide required documents may delay or cancel your request.

Fall 2020 Declaration Deadline is Oct 29. Requests submitted after the deadline may not be approved by the start of Winter 2021 enrollment. Notifications of Petition of Major Declaration approval or denial will be sent to students' UCSC email.

*Note: Cognitive Science and Psychology double majors should work on a plan with a Peer Advisors due to the complicated nature of this double major.
