Undergraduate Advising

The key to making the most of your educational opportunities is advising, so it is essential that you seek proper advice. Our faculty, staff advisors and peer advisors play an important role in advising on all aspects of the major(s). 

Advising Services

The Psychology Department Office in Social Sciences 2, Room 273 is currently closed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the campus actions implemented by Chancellor Cynthia Larive.

The following is a guide to the remote academic advising available for the Summer. Updated information to access advising services for Fall Quarter will post on this page on September 30.

Petition for Major Declarations 

In order to be eligible to declare Cognitive Science or Psychology, students must have all of the declaration requirements completed;

Psychology Declaration Requirements

Students eligible to declare must submit a Major Declaration Request to initiate their Petition for Major Declaration. Access to this form is restricted to UCSC email accounts- you must be signed into your UCSC account on the browser you use to access the survey.

Please allow up to 2 weeks to process declaration requests. If there are questions about your petition, you will be emailed by psypeer@ucsc.edu or psyadv@ucsc.edu. Please check your UCSC email and respond to any requests for additional information. When you are declared, a notification will be sent to your UCSC email with your attached major declaration form and academic plan.

Drop-In Advising with Peer Advisors

Available Monday - Thursday, 9:00AM - 11:45AM & 1:00PM - 3:45PM

Trained Peer Advisors are able to assist students with:

  • personal academic plans
  • graduation checks
  • general questions about the majors
  • major declaration questions
  • Study Abroad Department Approval forms

Peer Advisors are also available via email at psypeer@ucsc.edu

Please see the calendar below and click on the Zoom meeting link during the scheduled time to access Drop-in Advising with a Peer Advisor. When there are two links available in the afternoon, use the Zoom link for the meeting that corresponds with your last name (A-L, or M-Z).

Undergraduate Advisors

Undergraduate advisors are available to assist students with:

  • substitutions of transfer courses and study abroad courses
  • petition approval
  • Veterans Benefits Verification
  • enrollment assistance (click here for initial enrollment assistance information; new students with questions about Fall 2020 enrollment, click here.)
  • recommendations for courses and faculty to approach for research interests

Please email psyadv@ucsc.edu with questions, requests, and any forms needing signatures. We will respond within 5 business days to any signature requests. 


Undergraduate Advisors are available during Welcome Week at the Frosh and Transfer orientations and at the Faculty Advising Fair. For individual assistance during Welcome Week, please reference the calendar above to meet with a Peer Advisor. If you have questions they can't answer, Peer Advisors have a line of communication with Undergraduate Advisors and can refer you to Undergraduate Advisors if appropriate.

Undergraduate Advisors will be available during Drop-in Advising the first full week of classes (week of October 5), and will offer appointments in the Fall Quarter. Updated information to access advising services for Fall Quarter will post on this page on September 30. 

Field Study Coordinator

Students must attend a Field Study Informational Meeting before making an appointment with the Field Study Coordinator.  For more information about informational meetings please click here.
