Distinguished Professor Barbara Rogoff received two Lifetime Achievement Awards this spring: The Lifetime Contribution to Cultural Historical Research Award from the American Educational Research Association‘s (AERA) Cultural Historical Research Special Interest Group, and the Raymond Buriel Distinguished Leadership Award from the Society for Research in Child Development‘s (SRCD) Latinx Caucus.

Rogoff is an internationally acclaimed leader in studying the role of culture in human development. In a nomination letter for the AERA award, colleagues said she especially stands out for “her combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, by her focus on the strengths she documents among the indigenous and immigrant people among whom she works. Equally important has been the icon she has provided for how to do developmental research that is truly life span and historical at the same time, combining levels of analysis that would defeat many.”

Rogoff was the second scholar to ever receive the Raymond Buriel Distinguished Leadership Award award. With that award, she has now become a lifetime member of the SRCD Latinx Caucus Honorary Advisory Board. Members of the board represent highly committed, passionate, and trailblazing leaders who have made significant contributions in the field of Latinx child and family developmental science. Honorary Advisory Board members serve as expert advisors to the SRCD Latinx Caucus Steering Committee.

She also recently published an invited article in the Review of Research in Education that highlights her theoretical approach and its development. This concept posits that learning and development occur as individuals transform their participation in the practices of their cultural communities. The article describes how Individuals’ contributions and contributions of their cultural contexts comprise a mutual process.
